Mannion, Margaret

Nanuet, NY - Tappan Location

Margaret (Greta) Mannion passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends at her home on March 10, 2021. She was born on June 6, 1928 in Clooncolry, County Leitrim, Ireland, one of ten brothers and sisters. She emigrated to the United States with her younger brother Edmund in 1945 and lived in the Bronx until later in life, when she joined her brother and extended family in Rockland County. She married John Mannion in 1953, and they had two sons, Shaun (born 1956) and Martin (born 1959). John passed away in 1965, and she dedicated her life to her children and family and the numerous cousins in New York and Ireland. Sadly, she was also predeceased by her eldest son Shaun, who died unexpectedly in 1972. Greta worked faithfully for the Freidman family for over 40 years, starting out as a nanny to the children and ending as a caretaker for them as they aged. She commuted daily from the Bronx to Manhattan, and spent many summers at their estate in the Adirondacks, where she loved to go for long walks in the woods.

A devout Catholic, she attended Mass daily and placed her faith in the belief that there was a reward in heaven, despite the many setbacks she experienced in her life. She had great pride in her family from Ireland and the States, and was a willing host to all who came to visit. It was never said anyone left her house hungry, wanting a cup of tea, or lacking in conversation. She loved her family dearly, and would go out of her way to make everyone feel welcome.

She is survived by her son, Martin and his wife Tristin, and four grandchildren – Lily (22), Sean (21), Macey (19) and Natalie (17). She loved to watch and hear about all of their accomplishments in school and in athletics, and was their biggest fan. Additionally, her nieces and nephews, particularly Jane Casey, Christine Dillon, and Martin Stanley and their children were constant companions for her over the years.

Finally, in her last years, she was cared for by a wonderful group of caregivers in her home (Josie Patten, Maura Brady, Bernadette Hayes, Mary Stapleton, and Ann Marie Donohoe), who treated her like family and she loved dearly.

In light of the COVID pandemic, the family is holding a small private service for her. A live stream link on top of St. Catharine’s Church website will be available shortly before 10am this Saturday (www.saintcatharines.org). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Regis High School, 55 East 84th Street, New York, NY 10028 or Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
