L. Robert Connolly, 94, of Closter, loving husband of his sweetheart Mary (nee Collins) for 70 years; beloved father of 14 children: Lawrence and wife Eileen Kavanagh, Karen, Mary and John McPartland, Clare and Joe Mongelli, Thomas, Patrick, Madeline and Larry Burns, Margaret and Harry Brandes, Michael, Noreen and Tom Kahn, Canice Prince, Robert and Stephanie, Bridget and Ken Taylor, Peter and Patricia; cherished Grandpa to 24 and great grandfather of five; predeceased by parents Ella and Leonard, sister Madeline Fogarty, daughter Karen and son-in-law Harry Brandes.

Born in Fort Edward, NY; grew up in the Vinegar Hill section of Manhattan; proud WW II Army Veteran serving in the European Theatre at the Battle of the Bulge; worked at Cities Service in NYC and St. Mary’s parish in Closter, NJ; Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Council #9021; faithful supporter of Right to Life; St. Mary’s Holy Name Society; founding member and 2-term President of the NJ Gaelic League; member of American Legion Post No. 111, Closter and VFW, Post 162; originator of St. Mary’s pre-Title IX girls track program; involved in Closter Boy Scout Troop 63. He was always wiling to lend a helping hand.

Family and friends invited to Moritz Funeral Home ( in Closter on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral Mass Friday, Nov. 30, 10am at St. Mary’s RC Church, 20 Legion Place, Closter. Burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY.
