OBITUARY

Hoffman, Grace McManus

Orangeburg, NY - Tappan Location

Grace McManus Hoffman of The Nathanial Witherell in Greenwich, Connecticut, previously of Orangeburg and Pearl River, NY, passed away on January 5, 2021, after a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease and recent complications from Covid-19.

With a radiant smile, sharp-witted mind, an unshakeable calm demeanor, and the help of her husband Skip, and often members of her large and local extended family, Grace always focused on the children – the five of her own that she raised, the classrooms full of twenty-five or more that she would teach at any given time, and ultimately her nine grandchildren. What could not be controlled would receive Grace’s sharpest classroom rebuke of calmly dimming the lights and simply stating her famous line “stop, look and listen.” When she could carve out time for herself, Grace played the piano, devoured novels and completed New York Times crossword puzzles in her perfect penmanship. Christmas Eve parties post-midnight mass were a staple for many years, with Grace cooking breakfast for all. Summer vacations on Cape Cod became a family tradition and provided some of Grace’s happiest memories. Grace also loved to travel with Skip and kept detailed journals of time spent in Europe and Canada - meeting new friends along the way.

Grace was born on March 11, 1935, in Nyack, NY to Matthew and Helen (Scott) McManus and grew up in Orangeburg. After graduating as the salutatorian from Nyack High School in 1952, Grace obtained her Bachelor’s degree magna cum laude at the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1956. She married James (“Skip”) Hoffman in 1957, who predeceased her in 2019, after nearly sixty-two years of marriage. Grace taught elementary students for many years in the public schools in Great Neck, NY, South Orangetown, NY, and at St. Catharine’s School in Blauvelt, NY. She was active in the choir at St. Catharine’s, the Orangeburg Library, and the Morning Music Club Chorus.

Grace is survived by her daughters Susan (husband Brian Curry and children Tara and Brian Jr.), Cathy (husband David Gersch and children Ben and Max), Carolyn (husband Tom Irwin and children Matthew, Allison, and Darcy), Maureen (husband Jimmy Donohue and children Connor and Kelly), and son Jim (partner Doron Sabag). She is also survived by her sister Mary Ann Kendall, and in-laws Bonnie McManus, Charlie and Rosemary Hoffman, Ed Hoffman, Ray and Ellen Hoffman, Tom and Mary Hoffman, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her sisters and their husbands Gloria and Vince Mayernik, Helen and Ed Costa, brother Matthew “Butch” McManus, and in-laws Tom Kendall, Helen and Moe Scott, and Cricket Hoffman.

The family will have a private burial. A Funeral Mass and celebration will be at a later date for family and friends.
